CHAPTER TWENTY – THREE

The Swan Club

In spring 1990, I continued working on trying to get the Washington Resolutions to request an impartial investigation amended and passed. I tried to influence the Swedes to release their information on alleged sightings of Raoul Wallenberg in Soviet prisons. By this time, I also had back-up legislation in Albany duplicating the Washington Resolutions, just in case they did not pass.

The Resolution in Washington was in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Congressman Dante Fascell of Florida. It was also in several House sub-committees: Europe and the Middle East, chaired by Congressman Lee Hamilton of Indiana; Human Rights and International Organizations, chaired by Congressman Gus Yatron of Pennsylvania; and International Relations, chaired by Congressman Mervyn Dymally of California. This was in addition to the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Senator Pell, for a total of five Committees, and Committee Chairmen in Washington. There was also a Wallenberg Resolution in Albany at the same time.

There was someone on nightly TV saying “It’s 11 o’clock. Do you know where your children are?” I said to myself all the time “It’s 11 o’clock. Do you know where your Resolutions are?”

Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli had an interesting suggestion. His letter to me said in part,

“Thank you for your recent letters. It’s always good to hear from you.

First, let me state clearly that you have in no way imposed upon our relationship or our friendship. It’s been a great honor to work with you on behalf of the Raoul Wallenberg cause and I appreciate your patience in understanding the impossible pressures of my schedule.

Secondly, with regard to the Swedish and Soviet versions of the Wallenberg case, that presents a difficult proposition. The history of world politics since World War II no doubt colors the differences in these two versions. Even with the recent changes, old attitudes obviously persist. I feel that your efforts, on a Long Island level, have contributed much to the increased openness on the part of the Soviets regarding this issue. The best suggestion I might have for you to further your efforts might be for an expanded dialogue involving not only the Soviet UN officials but also Swedish UN officials. Perhaps one of the future programs of the Long Island Committee can include a joint Swedish/Soviet panel to address the Raoul Wallenberg case.”

My next event was a party at the Swan Club in Roslyn Harbor, one of the loveliest venues on the North Shore of Long Island! This was a donated party. The Swan Club gave me the party. Wasn’t that nice of them!

The way I was lucky enough to get the party went like this… Every evening I walked my dog, Danny, a golden retriever mix, in Sea Cliff. We usually walked on Sea Cliff Avenue. One evening while walking Danny on Sea Cliff Avenue, I passed The Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor office. Their fund raiser, Marie Sisko was inside. I went in.

Marie had called my home to request that my daughter, Marisa, who had volunteered for her previously, come in again.
